SUMMARY:Demetra Kasimis on Nostos in dialogue with Angeliki Tzanetou from UIUC
DESCRIPTION:  \nDr. Arthur G. Nikelly Annual Lecture\nfor the Preservation of Hellenic Heritage and Culture\n  \nAt a moment of unprecedented human mobility\, shifting asylum laws\, and raging anti-immigrant sentiment\, Professor Demetra Kasimis reflects on democracy’s longstanding relationship to immigration and nativism by returning to the thought and politics of classical Greece.  During the fifth and fourth centuries BCE\, immigrants called “metics” (metoikoi) settled in democratic Athens without a path to citizenship. Galvanized by these political realities\, such thinkers as Plato cast a critical eye on the nativism defining democracy’s membership rules and explored the city’s anxieties over intermingling and passing. Yet readers continue to treat immigration and citizenship as separate phenomena of little interest to theorists writing at the time.  Joined in conversation by Professor Angeliki Tzanetou\, Professor Kasimis will discuss the inspiration for her recently published book\, The Perpetual Immigrant and the Limits of Athenian Democracy (Cambridge\, 2018). If immigration was a central issue for the “originary” practices of democracy and political theory in Athens\, can this past speak in new ways to present questions of migration and citizenship? \n  \nBio: \nDemetra Kasimis is Assistant Professor in the Department of Political Science at the University of Chicago\, where she specializes in democratic theory and the thought and politics of ancient Greece. She is the recipient of awards from the National Endowment for the Humanities\, the American Council for Learned Societies\, and the Onassis\, Fulbright and Mellon Foundations. After graduating from Columbia University with a degree in philosophy and Modern Greek\, she received her Ph.D. from Northwestern University in political science. Before joining the faculty at the University of Chicago\, she taught at Yale as a postdoctoral fellow and at California State University\, Long Beach as an assistant professor.  The Perpetual Immigrant and the Limits of Athenian Democracy (Cambridge UP\, 2018) is her first book. \n  \nWe apologize\, but online payments are no longer available. Payment will be accepted at the door.

SUMMARY:Nostos Lecture - Prof. Andromache Karanika
DESCRIPTION:Title: Work and Wedding Songs: Perspectives on the Greek Female Nostos from antiquity and beyond\nSpeaker: Dr. Andromache Karanika\, University of California – Irvine \nModerator: Dr. Angeliki Tzanetou \nBrief description: This talk will take us on a journey of the tradition of folk songs and poetry from antiquity to contemporary examples. With a methodology of “excavating under the words” it argues that the women’s song and poetry tradition\, and also lived experience\, shaped much of the ancient poetry. With examples from Homer\, the Homeric Hymn to Demeter\, Sappho\, and ballads and folk songs from contemporary Greece\, we will seek to uncover women’s voices and experiences. \nShort biography: Andromache Karanika is an Associate Professor of Classics at the University of California\, Irvine. She received her PhD at Princeton University and has published articles on Homer\, women’s oral genres\, lament\, pastoral poetry and\, recently on Homeric reception in Byzantine literature. She is the author of “Voices at Work: Women\, Performance\, and Labor” (Baltimore: Johns Hopkins University Press\, 2014); she has also co-authored a textbook on Modern Greek. She is the editor of TAPA (Transactions of the American Philological Association) and serves on many committees in the University of California (Religious Studies\, Medical Humanities) \n  \nRegister\nThursday\, May 2\, 2019 at 6:00 – 8:00 PM \nNHM Kamberos Special Events Hall \n  \nWe apologize\, but online payments are no longer available. SUMMARY:Nostos Lecture - Prof. Nancy Sulton
DESCRIPTION:Title of Talk: “Nostalgia and the Non-Existent Country: On nostos and xenitiáin Greek Poetry”\nSunday\, April 7\, 2019 at 2:00 – 4:00 PM \nNHM Kamberos Special Events Hall \nSpeaker: Dr. Nancy Sulton\, Illinois Wesleyan \nModerator: Dr. Angeliki Tzanetou \n  \nDescription: In this presentation\, Professor Sultan explains and challenges the traditional notions of exile and homecoming in Greek poetry from Homer to Seferis. She argues that while the elevated\, romanticized ideologies connected with xenitiáandnostos inevitably lead to disappointment and pain\, nostalgia fosters optimism and nourishes communal bonding necessary for human survival in a turbulent\, ever-changing world. \n  \nShort Biography: \nNancy Sultan is Professor of Greek and Roman Studies at Illinois Wesleyan. She designed IWU’s first classical studies major in 1994 and directed the program for 24 years. Nancy received her Ph.D. in Comparative Literature at Harvard University\, her M.A. in Classical Studies from the University of Minnesota (Aegean archaeology focus)\, and her B.A. in Classics with a Minor in Music at UNC-Greensboro. She has worked as an archaeologist in Greece and Egypt\, and has published and taught widely in the area of Hellenic Cultural Studies. Her interests include oral poetics (cross-cultural approaches)\, mythology & folklore\, ethnomusicology\, Aegean archaeology\, modern Greek folk poetry and drama\, and gender studies. In 1999 she published a monograph that has been cited many times: Exile and the Poetics of Loss in Greek Tradition (Rowman & Littlefield Publishers). Most recently\, she published the article: Pseudolus at the IWU Ludi Megalenses: Re-creating Roman Comedy in Context (Classical Journal)\, and presented a paper on her current research project: What Sanskrit drama might teach us about Music and Audience Reception of later Greek drama at the panel of the International Society for the Study of Greek & Roman Music and its Cultural Heritage (MOISA) at the Society for Classical Studies conference.  She is the recipient of many grants\, awards\, and honors\, including the “Excellence in College Teaching Award” presented by the American Philological Association in 2009. \n  \nRegister\nWe apologize\, but online payments are no longer available.
