SUMMARY:Demetra Kasimis on Nostos in dialogue with Angeliki Tzanetou from UIUC
DESCRIPTION:  \nDr. Arthur G. Nikelly Annual Lecture\nfor the Preservation of Hellenic Heritage and Culture\n  \nAt a moment of unprecedented human mobility\, shifting asylum laws\, and raging anti-immigrant sentiment\, Professor Demetra Kasimis reflects on democracy’s longstanding relationship to immigration and nativism by returning to the thought and politics of classical Greece.  During the fifth and fourth centuries BCE\, immigrants called “metics” (metoikoi) settled in democratic Athens without a path to citizenship. Galvanized by these political realities\, such thinkers as Plato cast a critical eye on the nativism defining democracy’s membership rules and explored the city’s anxieties over intermingling and passing. Yet readers continue to treat immigration and citizenship as separate phenomena of little interest to theorists writing at the time.  Joined in conversation by Professor Angeliki Tzanetou\, Professor Kasimis will discuss the inspiration for her recently published book\, The Perpetual Immigrant and the Limits of Athenian Democracy (Cambridge\, 2018). If immigration was a central issue for the “originary” practices of democracy and political theory in Athens\, can this past speak in new ways to present questions of migration and citizenship? \n  \nBio: \nDemetra Kasimis is Assistant Professor in the Department of Political Science at the University of Chicago\, where she specializes in democratic theory and the thought and politics of ancient Greece. She is the recipient of awards from the National Endowment for the Humanities\, the American Council for Learned Societies\, and the Onassis\, Fulbright and Mellon Foundations. After graduating from Columbia University with a degree in philosophy and Modern Greek\, she received her Ph.D. from Northwestern University in political science. Before joining the faculty at the University of Chicago\, she taught at Yale as a postdoctoral fellow and at California State University\, Long Beach as an assistant professor.  The Perpetual Immigrant and the Limits of Athenian Democracy (Cambridge UP\, 2018) is her first book. \n  \nWe apologize\, but online payments are no longer available. Payment will be accepted at the door.

SUMMARY:Dr. Arthur G. Nikelly Annual Lecture for the Preservation of Hellenic Heritage and Culture Presents On The Rock
DESCRIPTION:  \nBook Description: \nThe marble workers laboring on the decades‐long restoration of the Acropolis are the invisible force rebuilding one of the world’s most storied monuments. Inheritors of millennia-old tradition\, few carvers exist today; fewer pass the Acropolis entrance exams. Their work is a highly technical amalgam of past and present\, yet what these master marble carvers do and how they do it it has been undocumented until now. \nAs the restoration enters its final phases\, this book of interviews explores the workers’ craft\, techniques\, training\, and specific roles within the restoration in their unique and deeply personal voices. On the Rock: The Acropolis Interviews brings together ancient building practices\, the teaching of traditional craft\, changes in the practice of architectural restoration\, and the social and class dynamics within the restoration site. Concurrently\, the book considers Greece’s political and economic crisis from the workers’ position. Amidst crippling unemployment\, work on the Rock continues\, despite radical cuts. How has the Greek crisis affected the technicians’ thoughts about their craft\, jobs\, and citizenship? On the Rock explores the intersection of these issues. \n  \nBiography: \nArtist ALLYSON VIEIRA lives and works in New York. She has exhibited extensively both internationally and in the U.S.\, including institutional projects at Kunsthalle Basel (Basel\, CH)\, Swiss Institute (NY)\, Storm King Art Center (NY)\, PinchukArtCentre (Kiev\, UA)\, Non-Objectif Sud (Tulette\, FR)\, Frieze Projects (NY)\, The Public Art Fund (NY)\, The Highline (NY)\, and SculptureCenter (NY)\, and recent solo gallery exhibitions at Daniel Faria (Toronto\, CA)\, Company (NY)\, Klaus von Nichtssagend (NY)\, Mendes Wood DM (Sao Paulo\, BR)\, The Breeder (Athens\, GR)\, and Laurel Gitlen (NY). Her first major catalog\, Allyson Vieira: The Plural Present\, was published by Karma Books in 2016.  She is currently Assistant Professor of Foundations at the Corcoran School of Art at the George Washington University in Washington\, D.C.. \n  \nWe apologize\, but online payments are no longer available. SUMMARY:NHM Virtual Book Club – Daughter of Sparta
DESCRIPTION:On Thursday\, March 17th at 7 PM we will be discussing Daughter of Sparta by Claire M. Andrews Virtually via Zoom \nAbout this event \nJoin the National Hellenic Museum’s Virtual Book Club! \nIn March\, we will be discussing Daughter of Sparta by Claire M. Andrews. \nThis selection was voted on by members of our book club! \nMore about Daughter of Sparta:\nIn this thrilling reimagining of ancient Greek mythology\, a headstrong girl becomes the most powerful fighter her people have ever seen. \nSeventeen-year-old Daphne has spent her entire life honing her body and mind into that of a warrior\, hoping to be accepted by the unyielding people of ancient Sparta. But an unexpected encounter with the goddess Artemis—who holds Daphne’s brother’s fate in her hands—upends the life she’s worked so hard to build. Nine mysterious items have been stolen from Mount Olympus and if Daphne cannot find them\, the gods’ waning powers will fade away\, the mortal world will descend into chaos\, and her brother’s life will be forfeit. \nGuided by Artemis’s twin—the handsome and entirely-too-self-assured god Apollo—Daphne’s journey will take her from the labyrinth of the Minotaur to the riddle-spinning Sphinx of Thebes\, team her up with mythological legends such as Theseus and Hippolyta of the Amazons\, and pit her against the gods themselves. \nA reinterpretation of the classic Greek myth of Daphne and Apollo\, Daughter of Sparta by debut author Claire Andrews turns the traditionally male-dominated mythology we know into a heart-pounding and empowering female-led adventure. \nBook Club is free to join and meets on the third Thursday of each month at 7 PM CST \n  \nTo purchase the book please click here \n  \nTo register please click here

SUMMARY:Journey Chicago 2022
DESCRIPTION:Please join NHM and our colleagues from the Chinese American Museum of Chicago (CAMOC) and the Japanese American Service Committee (JASC) for an exciting program\, Stories That Travel: Mythology\, Folklore\, & Diaspora. \nThis panel discussion seeks to explore the varied relationships different Diaspora communities have with the mythological & folklore stories of their culture of origin. We will interrogate the ways in which different communities invest in or distance themselves from their ancient mythology and folklore in the American Diaspora\, and how those relationships have shifted over time. \nThis program is a part of the Chicago Cultural Alliance (CCA)’s Journey Chicago Festival \nOur Panel: \nAnna Cai (they/them) is a queer Indonesian Chinese American community-driven artist currently living in Chicago who explores the futurities of Asian diasporic identity through relationships\, textiles\, costume\, performance\, film\, graphic design\, and print media. At the center of their creative and social practice is a desire to steer their community into a future that embraces a transformation of fiction and reality and rejects outdated constructs of nation\, gender and capital. \nCai has received multiple awards for their work in art\, design\, and community engagement. They were a finalist in Lesotho Fashion Week of 2018 and their work in film has been selected for Lesotho Film Festival between the years of 2018-2020. Most recently they were a recipient of the 2020 New Artist Society scholarship\, the 2022 Caxton Book Club grant\, and Graphic Design USA’s 2022 Students to Watch Award. They have collaborated with several organizations internationally including the Morija Arts Centre\, The Hub in Morija\, Lesotho Girls in Tech\, the Public Housing Authority of Residents in Charlottesville\, the White House Kitchen Garden initiative\, and the Chinese Historical Society of Memphis & the Midsouth. They have initiated numerous independent publications and initiatives such as The Morija Makers (2018)\, Stories from Westhaven (2016)\, and the upcoming Chicago-based independent magazine Tongues (2022). \nThey received a BS in Architecture from the University of Virginia. In 2016 to 2018 they served as a Peace Corps volunteer in Lesotho. Upon leaving the organization\, Cai apprenticed with a local textile artist and began exploring identity expression through wearable sculpture and performance. During this time\, they gained invaluable experience on how to build trusting relationships and engage in art-making that embraces an art practice at the intersection of community building\, education\, and design. They recently completed an MFA Visual Communication program at the School of the Arts Institute of Chicago where they were immersed in rituals that combine mythology\, pleasure\, play\, historical fabulation\, and the reclaiming of archives. \nDr. Katherine Kelaidis is the Director of Research and Content at the National Hellenic Museum.
