“What does Modernist architecture have to do with the Parthenon, a Classical Greek Temple?”
“What does Modernist architecture have to do with the Parthenon, a Classical Greek Temple?”
These are the kinds of conversations we are having at the National Hellenic Museum to make the rich heritage of the Hellenic legacy relevant today.
On May 19, the National Hellenic Museum (NHM) and Mies van der Rohe Society at Illinois Institute of Technology (IIT) co-hosted “Classical and Modern Mies,” a panel discussion exploring the blend of Classical Greek influences and constructivist forms in the work of German American architect Mies van der Rohe. The discussion was followed by a reception on the rooftop.
Mies, one of the most influential architects of Modernism, immigrated to Chicago from Germany and pioneered the architectural style characterized by pure structural form, glass, and steel. His influence on the built environment can be seen in Chicago, around the world, and in the work of subsequent generations of architects. His life demonstrates the impact immigrants have on their adopted homelands. As a museum dedicated in large part to telling the Greek American immigrant story, we celebrate the contributions of immigrants.
The unique event brought together a panel of distinguished speakers: Michael Lykoudis FAIA (Professor of Architecture, University of Notre Dame), Peter Kilpatrick (Provost and Senior Vice President of Academic Affairs at IIT), Kevin Harrington (Professor Emeritus of Architectural History at IIT), and Carol Ross Barney (Architect, Founder and Design Principal at Ross Barney Architects).
Guests filled the museum, including students studying architecture and preservation. Sharing Greek history and culture with the next generation, through exhibitions and events such as this one, is central to our mission.
