THE DR. ARTHUR G. NIKELLY ANNUAL LECTURE FOR THE PRESERVATION OF HELLENIC HERITAGE AND CULTURE
Allegory of the Cave with Dr. Lewis R. Gordon
November 16, 2017
6:00 – 7:30 PM
The lesson of Plato’s allegory of the cave is often taken as a calling to search for the “really real” instead of what is apparently so. Yet, some attention to the mythopoetics of ascension, return, and sacrifice reveal also a story of love not only of wisdom but also the wisdom of love.
This talk will explore this theme beginning with inspiring ancient Egyptian thought on wisdom and the shared Hellenic reflection through Plato’s Symposium as a guide to the iconic offering of his Republic, with an eye, of course, for its continued relevance in our world so beset by the seeming triumph of those who disdain truth.
